Today, I will be speaking about something many of you have been asking us to talk about… The most hotcake courses in Kenya.

When going to college/university, it’s very important that you choose the right course.

After all, no one wants to do a course that will take them years before they get a job.

Before I proceed, let me mention that there is no 100% sure-bet course.

However, some courses have a very high demand compared to others.

And, those are the courses that I will be mentioning in this post.

So, which courses will make you a hotcake in Kenya?

Well…

1. ICT courses

The world has greatly embraced ICT with more and more people and businesses going digital.

Today, nearly all sectors (both public and private) have digitized their processes in one way or the other.

This has led to a very high demand for professionals with various IT skills such as software engineering, cybersecurity, machine learning, digital marketing, and cloud engineering among others.

And to be honest, IT-related courses will continue to be in high demand for a long time as we continue integrating technology into our day-to-day lives.

With an ICT-related course and a good portfolio, it will be quite easy for you to find work.

Not to mention that most IT courses pay well more so after getting some experience on the job.

2. Engineering courses

These courses include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and telecommunications engineering among others.

One of the key reasons why you will never lack work with an engineering course is the fact that there will always be infrastructural development projects in our country.

And, in one way or the other, engineers will always be needed.

For instance, people will continue building residential and commercial buildings and here, they will need civil, electrical, and mechanical engineers.

Furthermore, as businesses and factories replace human labor with machines, they’ll need engineers to make, maintain, and repair these machines.

Some of these engineers will include electrical, mechanical, and mechatronics engineers.

Similarly, the public sector also has a large demand for engineers considering the many infrastructural projects by county and national governments.

While there are so many engineering disciplines that can we talk about, we still believe engineering is one of the best courses you can study in Kenya right now.

Remember, with an engineering course, you can go for either formal employment or self-employment.

One more thing: When applying for an engineering course, make sure that the institution you’re applying to is accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya to offer the course.

3. Medical courses

Another group of hotcake courses in Kenya right now is the medical group of courses.

Truth be told, people will always get sick at some point in life.

And, as the population increases, so will the number of sick people.

Not to mention that lifestyle-related diseases are also on the rise.

Ultimately, this has led to the demand for specialized and non-specialized medical practitioners.

Some of the most in-demand medical courses include nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and pharmaceutical technology.

Of course, some of these courses (like nursing) will give you opportunities even outside the country.

4. Sales & marketing

Show me a good salesperson and I will show you someone who can work at any company and make good money while at it.

This is because good salespersons and marketers are always in demand all the time.

Here’s why: The biggest headache for businesses and companies is how they can increase sales for their products/services.

That means that if you have a qualification in sales and marketing, chances are you will never go hungry.

Actually, a good number of salespeople & marketers are hired even without all the necessary qualifications.

This is because sales & marketing is a career that most people don’t like – and of the few that like it, most cannot sell effectively.

You see, for you to be a successful salesperson, you need to have excellent persuasion and people skills.

Just so you know, excellent salespeople and marketers are some of the best paid people in their organizations.

5. Law

Lawyers will always be in demand since the world is full of conflict – between people and businesses alike.

And at some point, these people/businesses will need legal advice or representation.

But to be honest, to be a successful lawyer, you’ll need to have one area of specialization.

This way, it’s quite easy to get clients and referrals when people know that you’re good at one field.

This is because there are a dozen types of lawyers such as bankruptcy, corporate, tax, criminal, family lawyers etc.

That said, this is another good course if you are good at persuading others to take your position.

6. Education and TVET trainer courses

Mwalimu as they are often called, will always be in demand because people will keep getting kids.

And, schools will never be closed down.

Be it at the ECDE, primary, secondary, or higher education levels, it’s hard to go for long without a job if you have the necessary papers.

But among all these tutors, the most in-demand as of this writing are the TVET trainers.

This is because the government has commissioned numerous TVETs as it aims to improve self-employment among learners.

As of this writing, there are over 2,400 accredited private and public TVETs in Kenya.

And, most of these TVETs are fairly new – if you go through the careers section on their websites, you’ll be surprised at the number of teaching vacancies they have.

Having that in mind, if you have a passion for teaching and you feel that you can be able to spend your lifetime teaching others, you can try an education course.

The good news is that if you have done another course, you can still be a tutor in that line.

All you need to do is to take an education-based course such as PGDE or a Diploma in Technical Education to qualify to be a tutor.

However, to qualify to teach at the university level, you will need to upgrade to a masters degree.
