Now that the KCSE results are out, you might not have qualified to pursue your desired degree program.

Fortunately, you can still choose one of the many available TVET courses and still land a well-paying job.

Not to mention, if you have the determination, you can use your TVET course to eventually pursue a related degree course.

With that in mind, in this post, I’ll tell you about different TVET courses (and their qualifications) that you can pursue… I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

TVET courses and qualifications in Kenya

It’s important to note that you can choose to apply for TVET courses either as a government-sponsored student or as a self-sponsored student.

The good thing about applying as a government-sponsored student is that it is cheaper.

However, this will require you to apply for the course in the KUCCPS student portal.

On the other hand, if you want to apply as a self-sponsored student, you’ll need to apply directly at the institution of your choice.

KUCCPS TVET courses and requirements

In TVETs, you can pursue a course at one of three levels. That is diploma, craft certificate or artisan, certificate levels.

Each of these levels has its own minimum entry requirements as below:

• Diploma – have a minimum mean grade of C-
• Craft certificate – have a mean grade of at least D plain
• Artisan certificate – you can qualify for these programmes even with an E

It’s important to note that some TVET courses require specific subject combinations.

For instance, if you want to pursue a medical course, you’ll need to have done Biology in high school.

Fortunately, if you’re applying for the course through the KUCCPS student portal, you will see all the necessary subject combinations on your dashboard.

And if you’re applying directly from the institution, you will find any subject combinations that might be needed on the course brochure.

How to apply for TVET courses

As I have mentioned earlier on, you can either apply as a government-sponsored student or as a self-sponsored student.

To apply as a government-sponsored student, you’ll need to apply through the KUCCPS student portal.

Remember, the KUCCPS portal is usually open after the KCSE results have been released for a limited period.

This means that if the application and revision stages have been closed, you might need to wait till next year to apply.

However, if you are going to be applying as a self-sponsored student, all you need to do is to get in touch with your institution of choice and they will guide you on which courses you qualify for and the application process.

Parting shots on TVET courses and requirements

As you wait to know your application status or to report, I recommend enrolling for a short course.

Here, you can apply for a course that will help you build your career such as CPA, or a course with a monetizable skill such as digital marketing.

While both are good, monetizable courses can help you earn some money on the side while in campus… You can use this extra cash to sustain yourself, pay fees, and even perhaps start a business.
